Pvt. Williams was a coal miner with Clinchfield Coal Company working in Dante, VA when he enlisted 06/05/1917. The 42nd Division, "The Rainbow Division" engaged in several major operations - the Champagne-Marne, the Aisne-Marne, the Battle of Saint-Mihiel, the first U.S.-led offensive in WW1, and the Meuse-Argonne offensive. They experienced the bombardment by German forces with deadly poison gas specifically shells filled with palite and yperite - aka Mustard Gas. Williams was killed by a high explosive artillery shell on 10/16/1918 during the attack on Hill 288, Meuse-Argonne, France. He was 26 and is buried at Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery, France.
Williams left behind a wife and two children.
