W. Wade Wagner

Wiley Wade Wagner
US Amy
Sgt
13064905
Co B, 7th Infantry
Born August 31, 1921 to Noah Macon and Rose Ollie Wagner, Shouns, TN
Died February 2, 1944

Wagner, a farmer, registered June 20, 1942 in Richmond, VA and after training at Fort Meade, MD, was shipped overseas in January, 1943.

Wagner's unit, the 7th Infantry Regiment fought German forces in North Africa, Italy and later in northwest Europe.

During Operation Husky, in July, 1943, the regiment made an amphibious assault at Licata, starting the Allied invasion of Sicily.

On January 22, 1944 the Allied Forces made an amphibious landing on the Anzio beachhead.  The plan was to open the way to Rome, but while the surprise landing was successful and mostly uncontested, the decision was made to consolidate the units on the beachhead instead of moving forward.  It was a costly decision.

Sgt Wagner was killed in action on February 2, 1944 and was awarded the Purple Heart.  Wagner is buried in the Shouns United Methodist Church Cemetery, Mountain City, TN.
