Art is an unbroken circle in many ways. It puts us in touch with the history of humanity- from Cave Art to Renaissance Art, from the French Impressionists to the Modern Art of Today. In that long trek of humanity, Art shows us the significant changes in life at the same time reminding us that the essence of the human spirit does not change. Who can gaze at a Renaissance painting of the Madonna and Child and not feel a surge of warmth toward motherhood. Art reaches into the innermost part of our being, reminding us of what it means to be human, to be loving, caring, comforting toward each other.
Art often rediscovers or reinterprets something valuable from the past. The famous Priest Henri Nouwen had a life changing experience when he saw Rembrandt's painting of the Return of the Prodigal Son. He had loved the famous parable. However, when he saw Rembrandt's painting, it added another dimension to his understanding and appreciation of what undying love that father had for his son, illustrating our Heavenly Father's love for us. The story had come full circle from Jesus to Rembrandt to Nouwen. And in telling his reaction to the father's hand placed so lovingly on the back of his ragged, barefoot son, Nouwen passed to his readers the indescribable impact that art can have on the human spirit. Such is the miracle of the Unbroken Circle of Art.
