Born February 20, 1948 to John Thomas & Rowena Griffith, Butler, TN


Griffith was assigned  to the 1st Cavalry Division Airmobile based at Fort Hood, TX. 

His unit was deployed to Vietnam on May 19, 1968 and stationed at Long Binh, the largest base in South Vietnam.

The 1st Cavalry in their offensive, Operation Toan Thang II, found and recovered the largest cache of munitions in the war.  100,000+ AK47 rounds, 643 mortar rounds, 35,000 heavy machine guns and a ton of explosives were left behind by the withdrawing Vietcong.  

As the 1st Cavalry advance towards Bien Hoa, Sgt Griffith was killed in action by small arms fire on February 5, 1969.

He received the Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart.  Griffith is buried in the Griffith Cemetery, Carter County, TN
