Ray Gentry
Ray Gentry
US Army
Sgt
2nd Armored Reconnaissance Company, 2nd Infantry Division
Born October 28, 1930 - Shady Valley, TN to Roderick Butler and Martha Isabelle Gentry.
Died February 14, 1951
Gentry was assigned to the 2nd Armored Reconnaissance Co, 2nd Infantry Division (the Indianhead Division).
The Battle of Chuam-ni was fought between February 14-17, 1951 in South Korea. This was a US response to the Chinese People's Volunteer Army (PVA) offensive towards Wonju for control of the supply line Route 24.
The 2nd Recon Company was sent out to patrol Route 24 in the gap around Wongju. The 12 mile long gap was due to insufficient US troop strength and obviously a weak link for the Chinese to attack. On February 13, 1951 the PVA attacked from the northeast causing large casualties and the troops to withdraw to the south of Route 24.
The fighting withdrawal saw more casualties suffered by the 2n Recon Company and Sgt. Gentry was one of them. He was killed in action on February 1951.
