James S. Phillippi

James Stephen Phillippi

Died April 20, 1945

Phillippi was attached to the 3rd Infantry division who landed in North Africa - French Morocco.  From October 1942 through April 1943 the 3rd Division fought through French North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and into Germany crossing the Rhine by end of March 1945.  They drove on to take Nuremberg in a fierce battle, capturing the city in block-by-block fighting in April.

It was during this last offensive that PFC Phillippi was killed in action on April 20, 1945.

For his bravery under fire, he was awarded the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster and is buried in the Lorraine Ameriocan Cemetery, St. Avold, France
