James W. Morefield

James Wilbur Morefield
US Army
Private
913th Field Artillery Battalion, 88th Infantry Division
#34143858
Born June 18, 1919 to Wilbur F and Lona Belle Morefield, Neva, TN
Died July 15, 1944

Morefield enlisted on July 18, 1941 at Fort Oglethorpe, GA and was sent to Camp Gruber, OK in the Cookson Hills for training.  The Cookson Hills were noted for being the hide outs of the "bad men and outlaws" of Oklahoma  - rough country. The 88th Division - the Blue Devils - then moved to Fort Sam Houston for more training before being deployed by ship to North Africa in December 1943.

In February 1944 the 88th Division relieved the tired, battleworn and desperate troops of the 5th Army - it was a cold, raw and rainy environment as they moved north pushing the Germans.

By July 1944 they were fighting in Volterra, Italy - in addition to dealing with German snipers, the troops also had to deal with the houses and streets being mined and booby trapped.  It was during this offensive that Pvt Morefield was killed in action on July 15, 1944.

He was awarded the Purple Heart and is buried in Florence American Cemetery, Via Cassia, Italy
