McCoy enlisted November 1, 1942 at Fort Oglethorpe, GA and trained at Camp Wheeler, GA and Greenville, PA.
His unit, the 15th Infantry Regiment, deployed to French Morocco and for the next several months, fought through French North Africa and Sicily. On July 10, 1943 the 15th Infantry was in the Allied invasion of Sicily, called Operation Husky which while successful came at a very high cost of lives. By August, the Germans had evacuated so quickly that large quantities of materials and supplies were left behind.
The causalities of this offensive were high 163 killed, 5812 wounded and 419 missing in action. Pvt. McCoy was one of those killed on November 1, 1943. He received the Purple Heart and is burried in Greene Community Cemetery, Crackers Neck, TN.
