Dickens, who was assigned to the 35th infantry Regiment was deployed to South Korea on July 5, 1950 with the rest of the 25th infantry Division. Their mission was to stop the North Koreans' southward advance.
The Port of Pusan on the eastern coast of South Korea, was important as it was the largest port able to handle large amounts of supplies and reinforcements necessary.. The perimeter of Pusan was established for UN forces to protect the seaport from the North Koreans. As part of this offensive, the 25th was assigned to Masan, an area west of Pusan.
It was rough terrain, and mountainous, which also made communications difficult. In addition, Korea was facing a major drought in the summer of 1950. With the excessive heat, little vegetation and clean water, conditions were hard.
The soldiers of the 35th fought hard to keep North Korea out of Masan and while sustainingheavy casualties, they were successful. During this offensive, PFC Dickens was killed in action on August 6, 1950.
Dickens received the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, Korean Service medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
He is buried in the Wilson Cemetery, Johnson County, TN
