Bishop enlisted December 28, 1942 and received his basic training at Granite City, Illinois. and was then attached to the 34th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division.
In Korea, the 34th Infantry Regiment was tasked with holding or delaying the North Korean forces near Pyongtaek on South Korea's west coast. An estimated 5000-6000 North Korean troops, backed by 20 tanks took on the American front of not more than 2,000 men
Communications were poor, the US forces were weak, exhausted and unprepared with outdated equipment, and were defeated. However they did delay the North Koreans for several hours, before evacuating to Taejon.
At daylight on July 20, 1950 the North Koreans struck the 34th Infantry with infantry and 6-8 tanks. US rocket launcher teams knocked out many of those tanks, but they were overwhelmed and forced to withdraw through enemy fire.
The 34th lost approximately 530 men that day and among them was Sgt. Avery Bishop. Sgt. Bishop received the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantrymans Badge, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal. He is buried in the Blevins Cemetery, Shady Valley, TN
